Anheuser-Busch has completed its 180 on its 180 Energy Drink line. As of this month EnergyThis will send out the new and reformulated 180’s as the old line is no longer available. The brewer’s non-alcoholic distribution arm, 9th Street Beverages, has rolled out a reformulated and repackaged version of its 180 energy drink this month, and for all of you 180 fans - the new product veers away from the original. The new 180’s nutrition panel now includes fiber in addition to the B- and C- vitamins included in the original, plus the product now uses natural colors, natural fruit flavors and natural caffeine from Guarana. The three flavor line will also keep the same flavor selection (citrus, acai and goji) will be available in 16 oz. cans. EnergyThis will add the 180 Red energy which comes with natural Himalayan Goji berry flavor to its line up during the month of May 2009.

More and more energy shot products are rushing into the energy drink market. So much so, that most successful brands make sure that they too feature an energy shot drink. What is the difference between an energy shot and a energy drink? Most energy drinks come in cans. The successful brands like Monster, Full Throttle and Rockstar sell mostly over sized 15 and 16 oz cans. The only exception to the rule is the grand daddy of all energy drinks - Red Bull which usually sells 8 oz cans. Most energy drinks contain between 9 and 15 mg of caffeine per oz. You will be consuming about the same amount of caffeine in an energy shot as you would with a whole can of any energy drink, but at significantly smaller serving sizes. For a long time most energy drink brands were publicizing new, bigger cans, but it turns out that the biggest increase in sales is actually coming from the smallest packages.

Energy “shots,” are concentrated one to three-ounce versions featuring the same basic energy mix of caffeine and b-vitamins as the larger energy drinks are now riding a wave of runaway sales multiples that echo the frenzied growth of first-generation energy drinks like Red Bull and Monster.

Just three years after the introduction of 5-Hour Energy, Nitro2Go, ZipFizz and their ilk, the category grew to nearly $100 million. With new brands and new distribution avenues coming on-line, however, the energy shots could be a $500 million business by the end of the year.

Like espresso to coffee drinkers, energy shots appeal to a slightly different group of consumers than core energy drink users. In their ability to satisfy consumers’ need for energy, the shots offer retailers a product that complements the energy category, but they don’t fight for cooler space with the traditional 16 oz. and 8 oz. drinks.
